Episode 58 - REPLAY Haley Pemberton

Mending Families is hosted by Melissa Pemberton and she brings you weekly content that is a mix of trauma aware interviews, parenting tips for those caring for kids from adversity, and stories from people just like you as they share their beautiful messy moments. Melissa hopes that when you listen each week, you will feel encouraged, inspired and take a little something away to help you and your family move from broken to mended.

I had Haley as a teen and we have been through so many ups and downs, but are on the side of healing past hurts, as well as our relationship. It’s been so fun watching her grow and see her follow in my footsteps as a social worker. Haley has her Bachelors in Social Work and works for a local counseling agency as a crisis response counselor. She lives with her dog, Hank, and uses art as an outlet to help her get through the big and hard of life!

On today’s episode, Haley shares her heart about the difficulties of growing up under some tough circumstances, how she felt when she first met Jon (my husband), what it was like when Jon and I started having our own kids, and when she realized she had her own stuff she needed to work through.  This conversation is very real, honest and raw. I think we all can take away something from what Haley shares, and she even has some great advice for those of you parenting kids who have experienced divorce, adoption, foster care, etc.  Enjoy!

Topics Haley mentions:

*Haley and her dad perform a fun dance at her adoption celebration…skip forward to 1:24 as the beginning is just a lot of talking and getting ready for the performance. Also, ignore the bad quality! It was before we had the ability to record on our iPhones!

*Haley is a fan of EMDR  therapy and recommends checking out Lutheran Community Services if you live in the PNW

*Haley recently adopted her dog, Hank, and has found that he has helped tremendously with her healing process. If you are interested in adopting a dog, check out your local animal shelters as there are always sweet animals that need good homes!

*Choose Joy daily! Pick one thing a day that brings you joy, whether it is cleaning, running, reading, playing, or dancing around the house!
